More information will be added, so please check back periodically. We have already received word about educational programs at the correctional center that the panelists were unaware of, and plan to post details here within the next few weeks.

  • What is being done
  • How we can improve our Criminal Justice System in Monroe County

Be an informed citizen.   Learn about the Criminal Justice Review that is currently underway in Monroe County, as well as other activities supported by our county and your tax dollars.   There will be presentations by panel members,  time for questions, and a reception with opportunities to learn about non-profit groups who serve people and families affected by the criminal justice system.

If you care about the human rights of those served and employed by the criminal justice system in Monroe County, please plan to attend. Criminal justice and human rights are a concern beyond the scope of our county, but close to home we have more opportunities to make a real difference.

Refer to the County Commissioners’ webpage for more information about the Criminal Justice Review that is currently underway.  The opening statement at the community conversations about the review began:

Earlier this year, Monroe County Government leaders – including the County Commissioners, County Council, Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney, and Board of Judges – committed to reviewing and reforming the Monroe County Criminal Justice System in order to positively affect the Monroe County Correctional Center population and the community, and to reflect Monroe County values.

A lot is happening in our county.   Come!  Be informed!

Panel

The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) will provide a moderator for the event.  Panelist statements (6:30-7:15) will be followed by time for questions (7:15-7:45).

Reception

A reception with cider and snacks will be held immediately after the panel finishes.  Representatives from several non-profit groups will be available to share information about their work in Monroe County.  (7:45-8:30)

Participating groups include: Amethyst House, Centerstone, Community Justice and Mediation Center, Courage to Change, Goodwill New Beginnings, Indiana Legal Services, Justice Unlocked, Kids with Absent Parents, League of Women Voters, Made Up Mind, Monroe County United Ministries, New Hope for Families, New Leaf New Life, Oxford House, South Central Community Action Program, Wheeler Mission, and Women Writing for (a) Change.

Parking

The UU Church has onsite parking, but it may fill up there is a big turnout. Please consider carpooling and/or parking at one of the nearby overflow lots, especially if you are familiar the area and able to walk the extra distance to the church.  This map shows the UU lot entrance, overflow lot entrances, and doors into the building.

An IU men’s basketball game starts at 7 p.m., bringing extra cars into the area and likely traffic congestion. We plan to wrap up the reception at 8:30 so people can leave before the game ends.
